In collaboration with biomedical scientists, Xi Xie, a full time professor at the School of Electronics and Information Technology at Sun Yat-sen University, found that optoelectronic instrument tools are needed in many basic biomedical researches. However, most of the instruments are not commercially used, resulting in many biomedical researches not being carried out.

In Xi’s view, the integration of microelectronics and biological sciences will greatly promote the development of medical care. His research focuses on new micro-nano device systems for biomedical detection as well as the regulation and treatment of diseases. He, together with his group, have advanced academic achievements in developing vitro cell micro-nano chips, wearable micro-nano diagnostic systems, and in vivo implantable diagnostic systems.

He is committed to the development and transformation of related prototype equipment. Xi's laboratory cooperates with biomedical laboratories to design special scientific instruments through micromachining technology to assist basic biomedical research. At the same time, Xi is actively carrying out research on wearable and implantable diagnosis and treatment systems with clinical medical value, hoping to provide new tools for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

The new micro-nano devices he developed will be used to solve problems of drug release therapy and bio-detection sensing in the biomedical field. He pioneered the development of a high-precision hollow nano-true array preparation method and integrated technology with sensor devices, and then expanded the application of nano-needle devices, enabling applications such as in situ detection of cells and high-temporal resolution to regulate cell behavior. This research on the new wearable and implantable diagnosis and treatment system has realized the accurate detection or regulation of epidermal or internal disease in situ, providing new ideas for understanding the mechanism of disease development and treating diseases.

At present, Xi is working on creating a national advanced bioelectronics research platform at Sun Yat-sen University. As a teacher, he shares his knowledge, experience and innovative ideas to students, hoping to stimulate their enthusiasm and inspire young students to know the importance of bioelectronics research. Also, he encourages students to develop creative ideas and independent thinking during their study.
