The high-speed space vehicle is regarded as one of the strategic high technologies to change people's lifestyles in the future. Compared to traditional aerospace vehicles, these aircrafts face longer distances, greater difficulty, and more complex flight conditions. Over the years, Feng Qu conducted systematic research in this area​.

To address this, Feng proposed a novel, genuinely multidimensional all-speed flux scheme in the curvilinear coordinates, which overcomes the theoretical limitations of the “dimension split” approximation and improves the accuracy of numerical simulations for complex flows in wide-speed ranges​.

Feng constructed the aerodynamic optimization design method for the entire high-speed space vehicle with large numbers of variables based on the discrete adjoint method, filling the gap in the aerodynamic optimization design of high-speed space vehicles. This method has significantly improved optimization efficiency by at least two orders of magnitude, making it suitable for both high and low speed ranges​.

These major innovations made by Feng have great potential for wide application in the aerodynamic design of future space vehicles. These technologies may become disruptive and change the aerodynamic design mode of hypersonic space vehicles in China and worldwide​.
